The Tarot Cards of the Major Arcana

The Tower Tarot Card

The Tower
Tarot Card Number 16 of the Major Arcana
The Tower signifies the materialization of the spiritual word and the the ruin of the house of "we", when evil has prevailed there. Above all, though, it is the rending of a house of doctrine.

Here the catastrophe really concerns the fall into the material and animal state. The Tower may be the chastisement of pride and the intellect overwhelmed in the attempt to penetrate the mystery of the divine where one of the falling people represents the literal word made void and the other false interpretation. In yet a deeper sense, it may signify also the end of a dispensation.
The symbolism of The Tower card is misery, distress, indigence, adversity, calamity, disgrace, deception, and ruin. It is a card related specifically to unforeseen catastrophe.
